Mayer specializes in navigating and addressing political economy challenges or opportunities in resource governance, with a strong focus on the security-development nexus. A former United Nations official, he previously led the mineral resources governance team at a UN Regional Commission. In his role as a Strategic Partner, Mayer draws on nearly two decades of global experience providing technical advisory support to Public, Private, and Third Sector actors on political economy, geopolitical, and geostrategic issues in resource governance. Having executed professional engagements on the ground in 37+countries, his background includes national and regional expertise across diverse contexts in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe, North America, and South America. Over the years, Mayer has led technical assistance initiatives that helped 14 countries review and revise their mining policy and regulatory frameworks, ensuring closer alignment with national development goals. His experience includes developing strategies to engage with Arabian-Nubian Shield countries and supporting international initiatives with Gulf States to foster collaboration on resource governance. Mayer has also contributed to the implementation of multimillion-dollar mineral resource governance frameworks, providing subject matter expertise on international responsible sourcing and sustainability practices that are grounded in local realities. In addition, he has established field operations for multi-stakeholder initiatives in the artisanal mining sector and facilitated multilateral engagements addressing conflict diamonds. A Duke University alumnus, Mayer has served on several advisory bodies.
