Collaborative Food Safety Forum

The Collaborative Food Safety Forum (CFSF or Forum) was a dynamic, stakeholder engagement platform for multi-sector deliberation on issues critical to keeping our nation's food supply safe.

Launched shortly after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law in January 2011, the CFSF brought industry, consumer, academic, and federal and state government stakeholders together to identify and address key barriers to effective implementation of the law. The Forum provided FDA and other agencies at the state and federal levels the opportunity to listen to and engage with expert stakeholders to help sharpen their thinking about the development of a prevention-focused food safety system. Through exchanges of ideas and development of policy solutions and mechanisms, CFSF stakeholders helped inform rulemaking, ultimately enhancing food safety and public health – the overall intent of FSMA.

The Forum was jointly funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 2011—2017. Over six years, the CFSF:

Held twenty-one large meetings or workshops, several small workgroup sessions, and several dozens of organizational or preparatory conference calls.
Reached out to and engaged over two hundred participants, including growers, food processors, distributors, retailers, restaurant representatives and myriad supply chain consultants, consumer advocacy groups, academics, and federal, state and local government officials.
Produced over thirty documents to support constructive dialogue, fairly and accurately capture the deliberations, and promote collaboratively developed tools.

In addition to the quantifiable work, the CFSF contributed significantly to building cooperation and collaboration among key stakeholders actively engaged in implementing and overseeing food safety systems. This increased and aligned understanding of FSMA is needed for fine tuning, problem-solving, and ultimately increasing uptake of requirements and fulfilling the law.
